Dumfries & Galloway LEADER is a European rural development programme based in South West Scotland, a predominately agricultural area of 6.396km2. The communities in Dumfries & Galloway feature highly on the Scottish Index of Multi Deprivation and is considered a disadvantaged area of Scotland. It has high levels of outward migration, an increasingly older population and high unemployment. Dumfries & Galloway sits on the border between England and Scotland.
The D&G LEADER Local Action Group supported an initial Day of the Region Project in 2010/2011 as a pilot project with 5 rural communities in the region. The selected communities show a variety of needs from social deprivation, perceived isolation and lack of integration in mainstream community projects. It is hoped through further development and delivery of Day of the Region working within a new framework devised from this pilot project and with partners across Europe, that we can learn from each other and that some of the barriers to participation will be broken and that the communities will continue to work for themselves and with each other in communities around them with a view to expanding the Day of the Region concept throughout Dumfries & Galloway in future years.
